Abu Dhabi: A few illegal workers have come forward in Abu Dhabi to take advantage of extended amnesty, said a senior official.
About 60-70 people have been approaching the emigration counter at Al Watbha Jail since September 3 when the amnesty ended, said Major Khalil Mahmoud Mohammad, Director of the Follow-Up Section at Abu Dhabi Naturalisation and Residency Department (ADNRD).
"Some of them are old applicants yet to complete the process. About 500 people used to come until September 3." He said five finger printing machines are working at Al Watbha and they are enough to deal with new applicants.
"So a temporary emigration counter at Shahama for amnesty seekers has been closed down as number of applicants tapered off. Although Al Watbha office is working on Saturdays, only about 40 people turned up there yesterday (Saturday)." He said more people come on official working days.
Meanwhile, Indian embassy said it would complete distribution of clearance certificates issued by ADNRD to amnesty seekers within a few days. It has shifted the venue of distribution from Thursday to Kerala Social Centre (KSC) as the emigration counter at Shahama was closed down, said a senior official.
The embassy was collecting the clearance certificates from ADNRD directly and was distributing them at Shahama emigration counter with the cooperation of volunteers from various community organisations for the convenience of amnesty seekers.
