Dubai: The Rail Agency of the Roads and Transport Authority has appointed Systra as consultants on the Al Sofouh tram system.

The tram system is designed to cater to the commuting needs of around 180,000 residents. The feasibility study has been completed and the preliminary design study commenced in June this year.

It is proposed to run from Dubai Marina/Jumeirah Beach residence via Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village to Madinat Jumeirah, Mall of the Emirates and Burj Al Arab.

"The construction [is expected to start] in January which will take 21 to 27 months," said Abdul Redha, Director of Planning and Design, Rail Agency.

The trams will be integrated with the Metro stations as well as the bus network.
