Dubai: The Ministry of Education, Zayed University, UAE University and the Higher Colleges of Technology are initiating a programme intended to transform education in the public schools.

Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, speaking during Zayed University's (ZU) 10th convocation, said yesterday: "It's success will eventually change the nature and scope of the Academic Bridge programme. We continue to pay special attention to the Academic Bridge programme and to the students' first year experience."

He said it's a long-term goal and until it is achieved, "we must improve students' experience and graduation rates from the Academic Bridge programme".

In the spring semester, an accreditation team representing the Middle States Commission on Higher Education will visit the university, he added.

"The first strategic plan, 'Charting the Vision', focused on 2003 to 2005. The second edition of the plan helped guide us through the following two years. We must now update the plan to cover future years and to meet the requirements of the Federal Government's strategic plan, which was announced [in] April," he said.

Deal with armed forces

ZU has signed a memorandum of understanding with the UAE Armed Forces to provide degree programmes to its cadets. "The university will open a new men's campus in Abu Dhabi to meet the demand," the ZU President said.

Dr Stephen Portch, Chancellor Emeritus, University of Georgia, the United States, was the keynote speaker at the convocation.
