Islamabad: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said that Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) has lost its credibility following a meeting between former premier Benazir Bhutto and President Pervez Musharraf.

Benazir's meeting with the military dictator was a blow to democracy, he said.

In an interview with a private television news channel yesterday, the exiled leader said emergency is being imposed to keep him away from the country, which came into being due to struggle and sacrifices of people rather than conquest of army generals.

Commenting on Benazir-Musharraf meeting, Sharif accused the chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of violating the charter of democracy despite being a signatory and the pledge not to violate it whether in power or not in front of masses. "The tradition of 'begging power from the generals' should end and the meeting between Bhutto and Musharraf should never have happened," Sharif said.

He said he would have appreciated the PPP chairperson's talks with Musharraf if she had obtained a guarantee from the generals that they would not topple civilian governments in future.

The PML-N leader said it wouldn't be an achievement for the PPP if it succeeded in convincing Musharraf to remove his uniform because the general has to do this some day.

"We will welcome Benazir Bhutto in the APDM provided she announces to quit talks with General Musharraf," he claimed. He said he would not enter into any deal with Musharraf and he would return to Pakistan after Supreme Court decision on his petition.
