Dubai: A shortage of Salik tags necessary to pass through the toll gates on Shaikh Zayed Road and Al Garhoud, has hit motorists again.
"Due to the shortage of Salik tags, we are forced to take alternate routes, which are really congested," said a motorist.
Gulf News yesterday spoke to several motorists at different petrol stations, who were disappointed after being unable to buy Salik tags.
"I have been to at least eight patrol stations on Shaikh Zayed Road, Bur Dubai and and even to a bank to purchase a Salik tag during the last two days but in vain," said Abdul Majid, a UAE national.
Abdul Majid had to travel to Abu Dhabi yesterday. He took an alternate route, which he said wasted a lot of time.
"On my way back, I again tried to buy a Salik tag soon after entering Dubai on Shaikh Zayed but again could not find one.
Complaints
The salesman told me that I could recharge his account if I already had a Salik tag but cannot give me a new one because he ran out two days ago," he said. Hundreds of people still come to buy Salik tags everyday but leave disappointed.
When contacted, a spokesperson at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) denied any shortage of Salik tags.
"No one complained to us," he said. A number of motorists said that they even called up the Salik hotline and the call centre operators were quick to give directions for alternate routes.
