Islamabad: The chairperson of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Benazir Bhutto said that her party would never accept President General Pervez Musharraf in uniform while the PML's Central Executive Committee (CEC) has adopted a resolution to re-elect Musharraf as president in uniform.

Bhutto, addressing a press conference in New York aired by a private television news channel yesterday, said that re-election of Musharraf from the present assemblies is a controversial matter and she would take recourse to the court if he tries to get re-elected from the present assemblies.

In reply to a question, Bhutto said matters relating to Musharraf's uniform has been mulled over at a high level meeting. But she did not elaborate.

Contacts

Answering a question regarding her purported meeting with Musharraf in Abu Dhabi, she said that President's House in Islamabad has denied the meeting, adding the PPP has contacts with the government at various levels.

"The PPP has contacts with the government at different levels to have free, fair and transparent elections, but regarding the meeting with President Musharraf, the Presidency has already given its version," she added.

Bhutto welcomed the release of PML (N)'s stalwart Javed Hashmi from jail after three years and nine months, and recalled that her husband Asif Ali Zardari was in jail for more than eight years.

"We are very well aware of the pain Hashmi has had in jail and welcome the court's decision to release him on bail," she added.

Resolution

Bhutto said she would spend time with her family in the US and address different ceremonies there. However, she said she will not be going to Washington.

Meanwhile, despite reservations from some members of its CEC, the ruling PML yesterday adopted a resolution expressing its resolve to get Musharraf re-elected in uniform by the present assemblies.

The resolution was adopted in a meeting of the CEC, which was held here with Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in the chair and also attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, PML Secretary-General and Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed and members of the party's CEC.
