Islamabad: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairperson and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto yesterday expressed hope that the current year would witness the fall of dictatorship in the country and called on the people to hold fast to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's philosophy to realise their right to rule.
In an exclusive interview with a private television channel, Benazir said that the upcoming general elections were critical in that if the people were kept out of the process again, democracy would fail to take roots in the country.
"The masses are the real source of our power," she said, adding that she was not interested in coming to power under a deal with the current dispensation.
Despite differences with the Musharraf-led government, her party supported its war on terror and its attempt to quell militancy, she said.
"Extremist elements draw on the non-existent democracy and, if democracy is not restored in its true spirit, the state of anarchy would prevail."
