Islamabad: Pakistan's ruling party president has said that former prime minister Benazir Bhutto has distanced her party from the rest of the opposition because of the government's conciliatory gestures.
Shujaat Hussain, chief of Pakistan Muslim League (PML), made the observation in a newspaper interview published yesterday, while a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader publicly urged Benazir to avoid making comments favourable to President Pervez Musharraf.
The PML chief said Benazir had assured the government that her party would abstain from and would not oppose the presidential election by the present assemblies if cases pending against here were withdrawn.
Shujaat said the government was not pursuing the cases against her in various courts of law and it was because of such gestures that Benazir had distanced herself from other opposition parties and did not personally participate in the London opposition conference.
He said the PML could consider forming a coalition with PPP after the elections. Shujaat reiterated that Musharraf would be re-elected in uniform by the present assemblies.
