Dubai: Dubai Customs destroyed 293 tonnes of counterfeit, smuggled and illegal products between January and May this year.
The goods were destroyed in coordination with other governmental bodies including Dubai Municipality, Public Prosecution, Ministry of Health, National Media Council and the Environment, Health and Safety Department at Dubai Ports.
The appropriate environmental conditions were taken into consideration before the operation, Dubai Customs said.
Yousuf Ozair, a senior manager at Dubai Customs said such actions to destroy counterfeit products will become more frequent.
"Such cases are no more sent to court since the implementation of the unified GCC customs law which gave Dubai Customs authorities the full right to seize and destroy illegal goods," he said. "We deal in a transparent manner with brand name owners and dealers and we keep them updated on any violation of intellectual property rights," he added.
A special section equipped with modern technology to effectively track shipments has been set up by Dubai Customs.
