Sharjah: New parking meters placed in two commercial areas of Sharjah will become operational on Saturday, according to a municipality spokesperson.

The Transportation Department at Sharjah Municipality decided earlier this week that the new parking meters in three districts will be operational on July 14.

"The parking meters have been installed for some time now, but were not activated yet. But as of next week, the new parking metres in several areas of Sharjah will be activated and residents will have to remember to pay for their parking space," said a municipality spokesperson.

Activation of the new parking meters is part of the municipality's second phase plan to incorporate all commercial areas into paid parking zones.

Zones

The new areas include Industrial Area 4, Al Gubaiba, Al Yarmook, Bu Danig, Al Manakh, Al Mahatah, and along Shaikh Saqr Bin Khalid Al Qasimi Road. Additional areas also include Al Estiqlal Road, Abu Shagara and Al Nud.

Already parking meters are operational on main roads in several of these areas.

Operational hours for the parking meters are from 8am to 1pm and from 5 pm to 10pm everyday except on Fridays. It will cost motorists Dh1 per hour, Dh3 for 2 hours, Dh5 for 3 hours and Dh12 for 5 hours.

Sharjah Municipality's plan was to install more than 450 new parking meters around the city in three phases.

The first phase of the project was carried out last year in June, where more than 180 new parking meters were installed on the Buheira Corniche, Al Majaz 1, Al Mujarrah, Al Shuweiyheen, and King Abdul Aziz Road.

The second phase of the project was first carried out last year in August, and 197 parking metres was installed in Shaikh Saqr Bin Khalid Al Qasimi Road, Al Ghuair, Al Estiqlal Road, Al Merraija and Turfana. The third phase is yet to start. The new parking meters will also provide motorists with the facility of paying for a ticket from the parking meter via a mobile phone.
