Dubai: Many public schools in the UAE will gradually start teaching Maths and Science in English, as part of a comprehensive project to revamp public education in the country.
Fifty selected public schools across the UAE will initially undergo drastic changes as a project designed by the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research along with public academic institutions.
"We aim to eliminate foundational courses that enable students to enter their first year at university.
"There should be a direct transition from high school to university," said Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Education.
The project titled, "Schools of Tomorrow," will be implemented gradually beginning in August by selecting 20 schools from grades 1-5, 10 schools from grades 6-9, and 20 schools from grades 10-12.
Technology
The entire school buildings will be fully equipped with modern technology facilities along with up to date playgrounds, sporting facilities, and a library.
Maths and science will be taught in English in grade one from among the selected schools and will gradually be implemented in the subsequent grades.
The project is aimed to finish by 2011 and the rest of the schools in the country are also part of the Ministry's agenda to be included in the project.
"We want students to graduate fluent in Arabic and who are able to effectively converse in English. This will help them in university and during their careers," said Dr Hassan.
