Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi yesterday announced a major development initiative - Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 - that is expected to transform the UAE's capital into a vibrant global metropolis in less than a quarter of a century.
The initiative will lead to a comprehensive urban plan for the city of Abu Dhabi in months. The move comes at a time when the emirate is witnessing a boom in development.
Projects already announced and those under development in Abu Dhabi are worth Dh1.47 trillion ($400 billion), according to estimates.
The urban planning initiative will create a coherent and sustainable environment for the country's capital city as per the vision of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,
The Executive Affairs Authority of Abu Dhabi was mandated in mid-2006 to design and carry out two key tasks in coordination with the Department of Municipalities and Agriculture.
"The first of these tasks was to bring the world's best urban planning and community development experts to Abu Dhabi to create a comprehensive plan for the city's evolution until the year 2030, in close co-ordination with the emirate's leaders," a statement said.
"The second to create recommendations for the most effective regulatory and institutional framework to manage the future urban development of Abu Dhabi."
While the specific outcomes of this initiative are scheduled for release in the middle if this year, Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 underscores a holistic approach to urban planning policy in the capital city, and a commitment that all individual developments will contribute to a shared vision for the city that respects and embraces its surrounding rare desert and sea ecology.
The government further outlined the principles that will underpin every aspect of Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 and that will shape the city's development.
"First, Abu Dhabi will be a contemporary expression of an Arab city, which has people living, doing, and thriving in healthy supportive proximity to each other," the statement said.
"Second, Abu Dhabi will continue its practice of measured growth, reflecting a sustainable economy.
"Third, Abu Dhabi will respect, be scaled to, and shaped by the natural environment of sensitive coastal and desert ecologies.
"Fourth, Abu Dhabi will manifest its role and stature as a capital city.
"Fifth, Abu Dhabi's urban fabric and community infrastructure will enable the values, social arrangements and culture of this Arab community."
The move comes within three weeks of the federal government's plan that is aimed at strengthening coordination among the federal government and the seven emirates.
