Colombo: Tamil Tiger rebels attacked an army foot patrol in Sri Lanka's war-torn north, triggering a gunbattle that left five insurgents dead, the military said yesterday.

The clash took place late on Saturday in northern Mannar district, an official at the Media Centre for National Security said.

Five rebels were killed in the firefight and the army suffered no casualties, he added.

Meanwhile, a minister visiting the UAE yesterday said in Abu Dhabi that Sri Lanka remains a safe destination for tourists despite terrorist attacks carried out by Tamil rebels.

The Sri Lankan Government has launched a mission to re-attract foreign tourists visiting the island nation with a strong team headed by the country's Deputy Minister of Tourism, Faiszer Mustapha, sent to the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

"Tourists are not targeted by Tamil rebels. I'm proud to say no tourists have been targeted in Sri Lanka so far," the minister told a press conference in Abu Dhabi.
