Tehran: Iran has asked for bids to build two nuclear power plants in Bushehr, a senior official said on Sunday.
The new stations will be built alongside a still unfinished facility in the south of the country, despite increasing Western pressure over its atomic drive.
Iran has said it plans to build a network of nuclear power plants with capacity for 20,000 MW by 2020.
The country's first 1,000 MW atomic power plant is now being built at the southwest port of Bushehr with Russian help.
"Iran is launching two tenders for the construction of two nuclear power stations of between 1,000 and 1,600 megawatts capacity in Bushehr," said Ahmad Fayazbakhsh, who is in charge of the nuclear power reactors.
"There are already contacts with Russian and European firms. It is expected that construction would take between nine and 11 years," he said.
