Dubai: A man became the first known case of "chicken flu" when he confused his chicken pox diagnosis with bird flu, Gulf News has learnt.

Dr Ali Al Marzooqi, public health director at the Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms), said the Indian's family called the Bird Flu hotline set up by Dubai Municipality to report that he had the deadly disease.

"We got a call 10 days ago involving an Indian man who said he had bird flu. When we checked, we found out it was chicken pox," he said. "They thought since chicken is a bird, it must be bird flu. They didn't know what chicken pox was," he added.

Dr Marzooqi said authorities received "lots of calls like this" almost daily, but encouraged the public to keep on calling the hotline.
