Abu Dhabi: UAE telecoms new boy du has received more than 450,000 requests from subscribers so far, a company official said on Monday.

Osman Sultan, du's Chief Executive, told Gulf News that number could reach 500,000 when the subscription campaign ends tomorrow.

"The booked numbers could reach the 500,000 mark as we expect in the beginning of 'book a number' campaign on last November," said Sultan.

The UAE's saturated telecom market has more than 5 million subscribers for a population of 4.1 million, taking the mobile penetration at around 121 per cent - the highest in the region.

Despite this, du, which is scheduled to launch commercial operations by March, has generated a strong interest among mobile users.

Requests for booking numbers by nearly half a million potential subscribers is a clear indication of the interest generated by the new operator among the subscribers.

He added that the new operator will confirm the booked numbers in the second stage next Friday, and confirm the new numbers or requests by the end of this month.

Sultan said that du has reached its projected number of subscribers. "We are very close to achieve our goals before the expected launch of du services," he said.

He added that the company's researches confirmed the impotency of the personal numbers for the subscribers.

"We had launched the campaign to give the recent subscribers to keep their favourites numbers and enjoy our advanced services on the same time," he concluded.
