Gaza City/Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas harshly condemned Israel's deadly raid into the West Bank city of Ramallah yesterday, saying it "proved that the Israeli calls for peace and security are fake."
The raid, which sparked gunbattles that killed at least four Palestinians and wounded 25 others, came less than two weeks after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met Abbas and promised a package of measures to ease restrictions between the two sides.
In a written statement, Abbas appealed to the international community to rein in Israel.
"The continued aggression will only lead to the destruction of all efforts aimed at realising peace," Abbas said.
At least four Palestinians were killed in a major Israel army operation in the West Bank city of Ramallah that wounded more than 25 other people, medics said.
Yousuf Abdul Khader, 23, Khalil Al Badawi, 20, Ala Al Himran in his 20s, and Jamal Jawela, 29, were mortally wounded in gunfire that erupted after more than a dozen jeeps and several bulldozers, backed up by two helicopters, rolled into the centre of the city.
The four later died of their wounds in hospital, medics said. Three people remained in critical condition in Ramallah hospitals.
An Israeli army spokes-woman said that forces had conducted an arrest operation and detained "four wanted Palestinians."
The Palestinian National Authority slammed the incursion, saying it was destroying any chances of jumpstarting the stalled peace process between Israelis and Palestinians.
