Dubai: The nation's telecommunications regulator said yesterday it might take action against new telecom operator du if it does not launch by February 12.
The deadline will mark a year since du received the second telecom licence from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).
"As per their licence, we've given them one year to launch their services," Mohammad Al Ghanem, TRA director-general, told Gulf News. "We would like them to launch before February 12."
Al Ghanem did not rule out a daily fine if du fails to launch by the deadline. "It is a possibility if they have not given us a proper justification for this," he said. He noted that it was too early to speculate on a penalty and that there are many factors to explain du's launch delay.
Osman Sultan, chief executive officer of du, told Gulf News he would be announcing the date of the launch soon.
"We are not yet ready to announce the full date of our launch, which depends on the processing of our number booking campaign," he said.
