Riyadh: A operation to separate the Iraqi conjoined twin girls Fatima and Zahra will be carried out at the King Abdulaziz Medical City here on Saturday.

Dr Abdullah Al Rabea, the executive director-general for health affairs at the National Guard, will lead the surgical team that comprises 149 senior surgeons, consultants and nurses.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Dr Al Rabea said the chance of success for the surgical operation, which will be conducted in 10 phases and is expected to last 20 hours, is not more than 60 per cent.

He said the babies are joined at the chest, abdomen and pelvis and they share a single kidney.

According to Dr Al Rabea, their condition is now stable and they are fit to undergo a surgical operation.

The condition of the twins was not stable when they arrived in the kingdom on February 4. A series of medical tests have now been held, he said.

The twins were brought to the kingdom as per the directives of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz. The king will meet their expenses as in the case of 11 previous operations on conjoined twins.
