Islamabad: A lawmaker announced on Thursday he would quit parliament to protest amendments to Pakistan’s Islamic rape laws that make it easier for victims to prosecute their attackers.

Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, who is also the deputy chief of a six-party coalition Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), said he plans to send his resignation to the alliance's leadership and the speaker of the lower house of parliament.

"I am resigning from the National Assembly because it approved these un-Islamic amendments to the Hudood Ordinance," he said.

Human rights activists have long condemned the laws for punishing - instead of protecting – rape victims by placing the burden of proof on them by requiring them to produce four witnesses to the alleged rape.
