Baghdad: Saddam Hussain's defence lawyers left the court on Monday after their requests were rebuffed.

Chief defence counsel Khalil Al Dulaimi and a fellow defence counsel filed into court, but instead of listening to evidence made a string of complaints.

Dulaimi said the case against Saddam lacked the "conditions for a fair trial." He and his fellow defence counsel clashed with the judge and then left.

Dulaimi's demands included one that non-Iraqi Arabs be allowed to appear as defence lawyers, which Judge Mohammad Al Oreibi Al Khalifa denied.

The judge also intervened to order Dulami not to refer to Saddam as "Mr President" or "your excellency".

The trial continued in the absence of a defence, with Saddam and his seven co-defendants represented by court-appointed lawyers.
