Colombo: Suspected Tamil rebels blew up two of their boats in a suicide ambush on a Sri Lankan naval base on Wednesday, the military said.
At least one navy sailor was killed and 11 others wounded in the first ever attack on the resort town of Galle, which is also home to Sri Lanka's main naval port, the Defence Ministry said.
A doctor at the Galle hospital said they were treating 12 sailors and 26 civilians for injuries.
Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels blew up two of their boats after entering the harbor area posing as fishermen.
The navy destroyed the remaining three boats, killing all rebels. However, it was not clear how many insurgents were aboard the boats.
The attack on the navy followed a deadly suicide attack on Monday that killed at least 103 sailors when rebels rammed a truck filled with explosives into a naval convoy.
The surge in violence comes as Sri Lanka faces increasing international pressure to return to the negotiating table.
