Abu Dhabi: A high-level meeting of Abu Dhabi Municipality and the Agriculture Department discussed the living conditions of bachelors in the heart of the city and its suburbs.
The meeting of the committee looking into bachelor accommodation problems discussed various aspects of the issue and reviewed recommendations to help solve the problem of cramped living conditions of bachelors, causing health and security risks.
The committee was formed under the instructions of the department undersecretary Juma Mubarak Al Junaibi to draw up a plan to resolve bachelor accommodation problem in Abu Dhabi and its suburbs.
The meeting was chaired by Abdullah Nasser Al Junaibi, Director General of Civic Services Sector at the department. The focus of the discussion was violation of Decree No 15 for 1989, which imposes limits on the number of people in an apartment room. Under the initial law, only two people can occupy a room. However, the local authorities later increased the number to three due to a shortage of properties for bachelors.
Violations
The meeting noted that the rule was continuously violated, with more than eight people squeezed in a single room and in most of the cases bachelors are living in very poor conditions, causing health risks.
Instructing officials to intensify their inspections of residential buildings to help fully implement the rule, he said: "Bachelors should not be allowed to live in villas, low-cost houses and apartments meant for families. The cramped living conditions in these buildings have been identified as the major causes of health risks and accidents involving fire."
The meeting also considered investing in acquiring land for the construction of low-cost buildings for bachelors away from family-oriented residential and commercial areas.
Al Junaibi advised officials to study the proposal of earmarking an area for bachelors.
Bachelors' accommodation is also a problem in Al Ain, which is being solved with a plan to construct a satellite town for labourers.
The architectural and engineering designs have been completed for the town, to accommodate 40,000 workers.
A number of blocks of buildings, with all the facilities, such as recreation, shopping, medical and mosques will be constructed in the mini town.
