Gaza City: Palestinian militants said the Israeli soldier they are holding captive will not be killed, but they refuse to release any information about his condition.
The militants implied on Monday that they would kill Corporal Gilad Shalit if Israel ignored a deadline to begin releasing Palestinian prisoners. Israel ignored the demands, insisting it would not negotiate with the militants.
After a 6am deadline passed, Army of Islam spokesman Abu Muthana said "We will not give any information that will give the occupation good news or reassurance. We will not kill the soldier, if he is still alive."
He added that the groups holding Shalit "have decided to freeze all contacts and close the files of this soldier."
The previously unknown Army of Islam was involved in the raid on June 25 that killed two soldiers and abducted Shalit, along with the military wing of the ruling Hamas party and the Hamas-linked Popular Resistance Committees.
