Abu Dhabi: The six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council yesterday discussed feasibility studies on a pan-Gulf railway submitted by five consultants. "The World Bank is also providing technical advice on the selection of the appropriate consultant, and a decision is expected by the end of September, and accordingly recommendations will be submitted to this committee to be forwarded to the concerned ministers before the GCC summit," Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Governmental Sector Development, told Gulf News on the sidelines of the 10th meeting of the GCC's shipping and transport ministerial committee in the capital yesterday.
Referring to the land link with Saudi Arabia a project to further expand the road network to absorb the increasing traffic between the two countries Al Mansouri said, "this is a very positive sign, and the more positive is what it indicates. As the current facilities were established to serve a modest GCC bilateral trade, what has happened is that this trade has been expanding remarkably, which entails upgrading existing utilities to cope with the increasing flow of trade between GCC countries." The meeting also agreed to establish a database for the transport sector in the GCC countries at the General Secretariat. Mohammad Obaid Al Mazroui, assistant undersecretary at the GCC General Secretariat, said a tender would be issued to private firms for the project.
