Whether it's Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry or the Road Runner Show, this year's Cartoon Surprises week, which took off yesterday at 10 shopping malls all around the city, has them all.

Organised by the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), this year's calendar of events has been designed not just to entertain and educate, but to inspire the participants as well.

The theme week runs until August 10.

Maitha Al Falasi, deputy head of the Cartoon Surprises organising committee, said: "The DOHMS's aim is to provide new and interesting information through its events.

"Cartoons have always been a big hit among children of all age groups, and what better way to get positive messages across to them than to use their favourite medium?"

The week has many interactive events lined up. For instance, children will be encouraged to create their own favourite cartoon characters.

Besides the host of innovative events, the larger variety of the cartoon characters together with the décor distinguishes this year's Cartoon Surprises from previous years.

The activities include Kids Cinema designated areas in various shopping malls built to resemble real cinemas and showing a cartoon movie custom-made for the themed week.

Children can also have fun by learning to make their own cartoon movies at the Cartoon Academy in the Ibn Battuta Mall on Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 10pm.

At these workshops the children are taken through the cartoon film making process from the drawing of the characters to providing their voices.

Another interactive activity is the Cartoon Hospital, resplendent with lovable cartoon characters who will teach the various mechanisms of the body to the children.

This will be featured at the Oasis Centre from 5 to 10pm until the end of the week.

The Cartoon Museum at Mercato, which will run until Wednesday from 5 to 10pm, holds an exhibition of the first drawings and instruments used to make cartoon movies.

The Magical Cartoon City, which will also run until Wednesday at BurJuman from 7.30 to 8.30pm, will centre around building a huge cartoon character, with the audience chipping in.

The Cartoon Fantasy Land event at Bin Sougat Mall running from 5pm to 10pm is going to build corners which are part of the cartoon character movies.

In each corner there are going to be workshops to produce the corresponding character.

The Cartoon Forest Fantasy at Hamarain Centre, the Jungle Cartoon Forest at Al Bustan Centre, and the Cartoon Sea World at BurJuman are some of the other interesting events.
